Changing A Scarcity Mindset

When you have too much month for your paycheck, then what you need to do is realize that there is abundance all around you and focus on the abundance and not your lack and as night follows day abundance will come to you.
Sidney Madwed

A scarcity mindset is perhaps the number one reason most people don’t achieve wealth.

If you have a scarcity mindset, you can overcome it. It won’t be as easy as changing jobs or learning a new skill to start your own business. When you gain a skill or a better job, if you haven’t lost the limiting effects of your scarcity mindset, you’ll soon be dragged back down to focusing on what you lack instead of what you’ve gained.

So how do you change a mindset? You can start by examining where it came from. You weren’t born with it. As you developed in your mother’s womb, you were more than likely provided evrything you needed. In fact, if your mother wasn’t taking in the vitamins and nutrients you needed to develop, those that were available would be taken from her body and given to you. You were protected from scarcity to every extent possible.

But once you left that “you-centered” world, things may have been different in a hurry. You may not have received the comfort you needed as soon as you felt you needed it. You may not have received enough nutrition, attention or mental stimulation. Fortunately, most of us were not deprived as babies or as we grew into toddlers.

It’s when you started becoming more and more aware of the outside world that the concept of scarcity came to your awareness. Maybe you started hearing people say they couldn’t afford this or that. You listened as they discussed what a waste of money certain things were. Maybe you started to hear that your family was poor or couldn’t keep up with the Joneses, couldn’t make ends meet or didn’t start out with the same privileges others did.

At this point in your life, it really doesn’t matter who said what back then. This is not an exercise in placing blame. This is only the suggestion that you start to locate those echoes of scarcity that you hear in your mind when you’re working toward richness. You need to find the words, the sayings, the attitudes and false beliefs and start to counter them in your own mind. Dig them out like bad weeds. Only by recognizing your limiting thoughts, then countering them with positive ones, can you eliminate them completely.

Sidney’s quote says, “… focus on your abundance and not your lack …”. Easier said than done, right? Unfortunately, yes. But it’s only true until you learn to recognize the words and phrases in your mind that play on that lack. Once you’ve found them, you can instantly attack them with thoughts of abundance.

And no matter how bad things look right now, there is abundance all around you. It’s around all of us. When we feel the warmth of sunshine on our faces, that’s abundance. When we walk past a bakery and smell the beautiful aroma of bread baking, that’s abundance. An unexpected kindness is abundance. When we recognize it as such our bodies and our minds begin to change. Our thoughts change. And our thoughts have the power to change the world.

You may be asking what the heck the smell of bread has to do with abundance when you’re not sure where the money for the phone bill is going to come from. That’s just more proof that the scarcity mindset has you firmly in its grasp. Listen, does the fact that you’ve taken a few seconds to be gratified by even a momentary abundance make your phone bill higher? Do you really need to feel guilty that you stopped and listened to birds singing for a few moments instead of wasting those few seconds worrying about a bill?

Let your thoughts change. Let them go free a little more each day. Trust. Recognizing abundance truly does bring more abundance into your life. At first it may be the simple things, the beautiful things that can make life better even when finances are bad. Abundance leads to abundance and before you know it, that abundance will be in the form of money. As much as you need and more.

Think. Focus. Recognize. Act. Your scarity mindset can and will be overcome by the abundance of life. It’s the way the Universe works and you can’t change it. Think rich and you will be rich.
